Background of the Study
Cancer-related stigma can lead to social isolation, delayed diagnosis, and reduced treatment adherence among patients. Nurse-led awareness campaigns have the potential to educate communities, dispel myths, and reduce stigma associated with cancer. In Taraba State, Nigeria, evaluating the effectiveness of such campaigns is essential to inform future interventions.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to raise awareness, cancer-related stigma persists in many communities within Taraba State. This stigma can adversely affect patients' quality of life and hinder public health initiatives. Assessing the impact of nurse-led campaigns can provide insights into their effectiveness and areas needing improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led awareness campaigns on community perceptions of cancer in Taraba State.
2. To identify specific areas where stigma has been reduced following the campaigns.
3. To determine the challenges faced by nurses in implementing these campaigns.
Research Questions
1. How have nurse-led awareness campaigns influenced community attitudes toward cancer in Taraba State?
2. In which aspects has cancer-related stigma decreased post-campaign?
3. What obstacles do nurses encounter during the execution of these campaigns?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led awareness campaigns significantly improve community perceptions of cancer.
2. There is a measurable reduction in specific stigmatizing beliefs and behaviors following the campaigns.
3. Nurses face challenges such as limited resources, cultural barriers, and misinformation during campaign implementation.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on communities in Taraba State where nurse-led cancer awareness campaigns have been conducted. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with community members and participating nurses. Limitations may include recall bias and the variability of campaign content across different areas.
